Progressive education has been around for some time, beginning in the late nineteenth century. John Dewey (1859-1952) is considered an American pioneer of the Progressive Education Movement. Today, it takes many forms, from Democratic Education to alternative education such as unschooling or homeschooling. We have been thinking a lot here at Nurture Search about what Progressive Education means to us and where can we find it in action.

So often in education we focus on the wrong things. Test results. Marks. Awards. we need education settings that fire up a passion for learning, where children are recongised as having unique talents and interests.

We love this article from Shelley Wright - 'Are You Ready to Join the Slow Education Movement?'

"In education, McDonaldization attempts to wipe out any of the messiness or inefficiencies of learning. Instead, it attempts to reduce it to a commodity that can be packaged, marketed and sold. Rather than cultivating a deep, holistic love of learning that touches every aspect of a student’s life, learning is reduced to an assembly line. As we allow this to happen, we impose a mechanistic view of learning (which, in nature, is largely an organic process) and at a great cost."
