Experienced leader with a deep understanding of and commitment to progressive ed

Hanahau’oli School, a K-6 progressive school in Honolulu, Hawaii seeks a new Head of School for July 2019.

With a deep commitment to learning by doing, Hanahau’oli integrates essential skills and concepts of the basic disciplines. It promotes critical thinking and emphasizes the important role of the arts as an expression of self and culture.

The next Head of Hanahau’oli should be an experienced leader with a deep understanding of and commitment to progressive education.

Here are the key characteristics they are looking for:

  • Oversee academic program and curriculum, including oversight, supervision, professional development and evaluation of teachers and teaching assistants
  • Leadership of hiring process for new faculty/staff
  • Collaborate with administrative and teaching staff to communicate curriculum and programs to current families
  • Celebrate progressive education, the schools roots and values and make links with other progressive education settings in the UK and beyond
  • Coordinate new teaching staff orientation and mentorship
  • Oversee after school sessions, supervise and evaluate director of after school sessions
  • Lead Safety Committee, and manage emergency planning, preparation of handbooks and drills
  • Work with administrative colleagues to support the school’s mission, students and families
  • Attend faculty and board meetings, and serve as appropriate on board committees
  • Other duties as assigned by the head of school

Strong candidates must have the following professional and personal attributes:

  • Master’s degree in teaching or educational leadership or equivalent
  • Significant early childhood or primary school teaching experience and curriculum development
  • Demonstrated leadership experience
  • Strong verbal, written, organisational and relational skills
  • Ability to initiate and facilitate thoughtful consideration focused on healthy school growth and change
  • A collaborative and growth mindset
  • The ability to provide critical feedback in direct, honest and respectful ways
  • A sense of humour and a love of the life of school
  • The ability to work hard and have fun simultaneously
  • Creativity and initiative
  • A willingness to pitch in when/where needed
  • Understanding of and commitment to progressive education ideals and practices, democratic values, equity, inclusion and social justice
